Special education and related services are available for students with educational disabilities starting on their third birthday and continuing to age 21.
Preschool aged children with special needs who are eligible for special education services can access services by contacting the Special Education Department.
Kindergarten through twelfth grade eligible students are provided special education services by a wide array of professionals within the Macon R-1 School District.

The district seeks to identify and evaluate students who may have disabilities, as defined by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The district will provide students with disabilities a free and appropriate public education as required by law. No qualified student with a disability shall, on the basis of disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or otherwise be subjected to discrimination under any district program, including nonacademic services and extracurricular activities.
Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) is a state and federally-mandated program for young children with disabilities, ages 3-5. Children who meet eligibility criteria may receive Early Childhood Special Education services in various settings, such as a pre-kindergarten classroom, in the home, or in community settings, such as Head Start and preschool. Services can range from occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech services, language services, adaptive behavior skills, and independent skills.
