– NOTICE OF SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDACY FILING –
Macon County R-I School District


Macon residents interested in serving on the Macon County R-I Board of Education for the April 7, 2026,  General Municipal Election will begin on Tuesday,  December 9,  2025,  and run through Tuesday,  December 30,  2025 during the days/hours noted below.   The district will not be accepting candidate filings on days that the district is closed due to inclement weather,  emergency closings,  or holiday breaks,  except for the first and last day of filing during designated times unless severe inclement weather causes unsafe travel conditions.

There are three (3) positions available,  each with a three (3) year term (April 2026 - April 2029). 
Candidates will be placed on the ballot determined by the order of filing.

 

December 9 - 12, 2025                   Regular Business Day Office Hours                           8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

December 15 - 19, 2025                 Regular Business Day Office Hours                           8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

December 22 - 29, 2025                Winter Break                                                                                  Office Closed

December 30, 2025                          Limited Office Hours - Final Closing Date           4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 

CANDIDATE FILING

Qualified residents who are interested in becoming a candidate for the Macon School Board are required to file their Declaration of Candidacy,  in person,  with the Board of Education Secretary,  Selinda Thomsen,  at the District Administration Office located at 902 North Missouri Street, 3rd Floor,  Macon,  MO 63552. 

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be a citizen of the United States of America.   § 162.291, RSMo.
  • Be a resident taxpayer of the Macon R-I School District.  A "taxpayer" is an individual who has paid taxes to the state or any subdivision thereof within the immediately preceding 12-month period.  § 162.291, RSMo.
  • Have resided in the district and Missouri for a minimum of one year immediately preceding their election or appointment.   § 8; § 162.291, RSMo.
  • Be at least 24 years of age.  § 162.291, RSMo.
  • Not be delinquent in the payment of any state income taxes,  personal property taxes,  municipal taxes or real property taxes on their place of residence.  If an applicant is a past or present corporate officer of any fee office,  that office cannot be delinquent in the payment of any taxes owed to the state.  § 115.306, RSMo.
  • Have not been found guilty of nor pled guilty to a felony under the federal laws of the United States of America or to a felony under Missouri law or an offense committed in another state that would be considered a felony in Missouri.  § 115.306, RSMo.
  • Have not been convicted of or entered a guilty plea for the offense of assault in the first or second degree under § 565.050 or § 565.052, RSMo.,  or the offense of harassment in the first or second degree under § 565.090 or § 565.091,  RSMo.,  where such assault or harassment occurred on school district grounds.  § 162.014, RSMo.
  • Not be registered or required to be registered as a sex offender pursuant to § 162.014, RSMo.
  • Have filed,  or the treasurer of an existing candidate committee has filed,  all required campaign disclosure reports with the Missouri Ethics Commission,  when applicable,  for all previous elections in which they were candidates.  § 130.071, RSMo.

 

CANDIDATE EXPECTATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Candidate must declare intent to become a candidate/file in person;
  • Candidate must complete Candidate Declaration Form;
  • Candidate must complete Form 5120 with the Missouri Department of Revenue;
  • Candidate must acknowledge that they received notice of their obligation to file a PFD/Personal Financial Disclosure Statement and received a copy of MEC’s Guide to Ethics Law – A Plain English Summary;
  • Candidate must complete/file a Personal Financial Disclosure with Missouri Ethics Commission – Due January 13, 2026;
  • If elected, law requires completion of 18.5 training hours within one year of election and one-hour refresher training every additional year served;
  • Expected time commitment to be present and actively participate in monthly school board meetings;
  • Make decisions based on evidence rather than personal experience or beliefs;
  • Advocate on behalf of students, the district and public education within community and with local, state and federal elected officials.

The Board of Education is a volunteer representative body elected by the registered voters of the Macon County R-I School District.
 A board member is:

  • Committed to listen and collaborate with other leaders;
  • Trusting in the democratic process.

The school board governs the school district and provides leadership and advocacy for public education. 
School boards are charged with making decisions in the best interest of the entire district.
